Jean-Pierre Conte on Why the Team Matters More Than the Market

Jean-Pierre Conte has watched markets rise and fall over decades in private equity. In an Oct. 8, 2026, column for Forbes Business Council, he named the factor he says outlasts both: the people running the company.

Conte is the founder and managing partner of his family office, Lupine Crest Capital, which is based in Aspen, Colorado. His column was written for entrepreneurs and business executives. It is mostly about people.

Markets and Management

“I’ve seen strong markets fail to save weak management,” Jean-Pierre Conte wrote.

Sector knowledge and long relationships also appear in that section of the column, titled “What Hasn’t Changed,” along with leaders who built strong companies in harsh conditions.

A Rule in One Line

From there, the column moves to how a family office lets him apply that approach with personal capital. He founded Lupine Crest Capital, his family office, in March 2025.

Reading a Team

JP Conte wrote that years in the field help an investor “read a management team quickly.” Those same years, he added, build relationships with founders, who often call first. Those relationships take years to form, according to the column.

No checklist is offered for judging leaders, and no formula for weighing one team against another. He has spent his working life in private equity, across healthcare, software, financial services and industrial technology.

The Same Question in Philanthropy

Conte sits on the advisory board of Sponsors for Educational Opportunity San Francisco, and when that board brought in new leadership, the decision “wasn’t an easy call,” he wrote in a June 2025 column. Over the years that followed, its reach among Bay Area students grew by a factor of five to seven. Its SEO Scholars program is free for students.

Large donors, he wrote, will take part in choices of that kind. They will want to, in his view.

“Just like with investing, a smart philanthropist should always do their due diligence,” Conte wrote in the same piece.

Showing Up

A December 2025 column carried the idea into education. Conte urged business leaders to visit the programs they fund in person and meet the students there. Conte has supported Bay Area education programs, including SEO Scholars and 10,000 Degrees, for many years.

“A single conversation can change someone’s perception of what’s possible,” he wrote there.

His October 2026 piece returns that attention to business. “Put people first” is the heading of its second takeaway, and J-P Conte asked readers to start any decision with an honest look at the team.
